The Unsent Project is a collection of over 40,000 unsent text messages to first loves. Messages are submitted anonymously from people all over the world. Rora Blue started the Unsent Project in 2015 to figure out what color people see love in. To investigate this, submissions are displayed on the color the submitter associates with their first love. The content of the submissions are wide ranging, encompassing just about every emotion. The term first love is open to interpretation and messages have been submitted to lovers, best friends, exes, parents, siblings, and even pets. The Unsent Project exists in both physical and digital forms. All texts are submitted and stored digitally in an online archive which can be sorted by name and color. Submissions are also printed out and turned into large collages on wood panel with resin. The collages explore the relationship between color and emotion. The Unsent Project has been featured in news outlets such as the Huffington Post, Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Refinery 29, Women’s Health, and Good Morning America.
THE ORIGINAL RAINBOW COLLAGE
After receiving around 2,000 submissions in the summer of 2015 Rora Blue wanted to find a way to display the incredible submissions she received. She had submissions in 20 colors and an equally diverse number of emotional tones. Rora selected 338 messages that stood out to her the most and organized them by color into a rainbow collage. The collage captured exactly what she had found; people see love in every color of the rainbow.
WHAT COLOR DO PEOPLE SEE LOVE IN?
Since 2015, 39,000 more messages have been submitted to the Unsent Project. All have been categorized by color. Out of those 41,904 submissions . . .

3,408 are Light Blue
3,141 are Dark Blue
2,861 are Maroon
2,618 are Yellow
2,344 are Red
1,814 are White
1,728 are Light Grey
1,286 are Dark Green
1,157 are Grey
1,066 are Light Purple

While people still submit in every color… Shades of blue have more submissions than 10 other colors combined. Exactly 28% of people that submit to the Unsent Project see love in a shade of blue. This can be compared to red, which is the second most submitted color and accounts for 13% of submissions.
Do same color messages have a similar emotional tone?
There seems to be a connection between the emotional tone of a message and the color it’s submitted in. For blue this is broad; exhibiting a wide range like the ocean. For other colors it is more defined. To further explore this connection Rora Blue is creating a series of Unsent Project Collages, one for each color. The size of the collage is reflective of how many submissions there are in that color. Starting with brown and ending with blue the collages will get larger and larger as she explores colors with more and more submissions. The collages are curated and display any submission that sticks out in the archive. Once the body of work is complete, the 20 collages will again read as a rainbow, but this time around a massive room.
